Keeping It Real The Realities of Breastfeeding

INTRODUCTION – Keeping it Real the Realities of Breastfeeding, is exactly that a course to give you a realistic view of how it all works.
WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN? – The origins of mammals milk being the only fluid needed to support their young
WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT BREAST MILK?- I take you through the amazing (I use that word a lot so be warned!) elements of breastmilk and which do what and why?
HOW DOES IT ALL WORK – The cocktail of innate reflexes, hormones and behaviours are explained to give you an understanding of what to expect and what to do to get things off to a good start
THE EFFECTS OF BIRTHING METHOD – how your birth will determine your normal. I don’t like the term ‘Normal Delivery” whatever the type of birth and the preceding labour will be your normal and will determine how breastfeeding may get off to a start.
THE GOLDEN HOUR – Leave baby to it. You will see a video of the baby being delivered onto her mother and how her innate reflexes enable her to find and latch on the breast, this is known as the birth crawl.
IT TAKES ALL SORTS – Working out what your normal is going to be.
POSITION AND LATCH – this lesson opens session 3 taking the concept of the birth crawl and baby’s reflexes to latch a step further.
BODY – BABY – BREAST – In that order – Explaining different positions and the theory of natural breastfeeding which is very much baby led.
This section explains what happens if baby has not been getting enough milk.
IT’S NOT YOU IT’S BABY – 96% of problems with breastfeeding are down to the latch and not that you do not have enough milk, which is often the misconception.
MAKING INFORMED CHOICES BREAST – BREASTMILK & FORMULA – If feeding hasn’t got off to the best start which can be the case a feeding support plan will be put in place and this may be a simple as helping with the position and latch, or having to express your breastmilk as a top up to a breastfeed and then may need the addition of formula milk if there isn’t enough breastmilk to give baby enough for a feed and a top up. This explains about the differences and should support you to make an informed choice.
THOSE EARLY HAZY DAYS: Keeping it real is all about giving you a honest view of the realities of breastfeeding and how to get through those early days.
WILL I EVER SLEEP AGAIN? Here we talk about what a night and day are likely to look like and how to cope
CHANGE YOUR PLANS – The fourth trimester is a time for you and baby and your partner if you have one to get to know each other, so the plan should be to make no plans.
…AND RELAX – I finish this course with a mindful relaxation that will be available to download from your lesson pack.
