Around 36 weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s lungs finish developing. They now contain enough surfactant to enable them to inflate their own lungs with their first breath after birth.
At this point, you may start to feel more anxiety around the upcoming birth. This is completely normal and to be expected. Come back to the skills you learnt in your antenatal courses regarding relaxation, increasing oxytocin, and communication techniques to address these anxieties and make sure that you are being supported through them, rather than trying to cope alone.
Your nesting instinct may start to kick in around this time. You may find yourself cleaning, organising, and preparing for your baby’s arrival. Things you may want to consider include: Have you got your hospital bag almost packed? The nursery almost ready? The car seat sorted for the journey home after birth? Antenatal courses and birth plan and preferences document complete? Come back to the list that you made around 20 weeks to help remind you what you wanted to get done before your baby arrives.
