Size of Baby

About the size of a fish food pellet or a green lentil – about 3mm.

Development of Baby

Your baby’s three layers of cells are developing fast. They are becoming more kidney bean shaped and less seed shaped, nubs are forming where arms and legs will be, and the neural tube, which will become the spinal cord, can be seen.

Maternal Symptoms

Around this time there are a lot of hormonal changes taking place in the body. This, combined with other factors, may make you feel sick. Despite its name, morning sickness does not always occur in the morning and may occur either throughout the day, or be worse at particular periods, for example in the evenings. Morning sickness is fairly common, occurring in around 80% of pregnancies. However, in its most severe form of Hyperemesis Gravidum it is much rarer, occurring in only around 1-3% of pregnancies.

Things to Consider

Around this time, you will want to book your first appointment with either your GP, directly with the hospital you have chosen, or with your Independent Midwifery team. This appointment is usually booked in between 8 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. It is common for the pregnant person to attend this appointment by themselves, however you can attend this with your partner, birth partner, or support person if you wish to. Don’t be surprised if your partner, birth partner, or support person is asked to leave the room for a portion of the appointment, this is common practice.
