Your baby’s foundations for life are now almost complete. Most of their internal organs are almost completely formed and over the next few weeks will begin to function.
You may experience a wide range of pregnancy symptoms similar to what you have experienced up to this point. You may have cravings for certain types of food and notice that your skin has changed. You may notice you have a dark line over your abdomen, this is called a Linea Nigra and in most people it fades again after birth, although in some people it remains after pregnancy.
You should have been offered your 20 week scan at this point. This scan takes place between 18 weeks and 20 weeks 6 days. This scan is basically your baby’s first MOT as their bones, heart, kidney’s, spinal cord, brain, and face are examined. The sonographer is checking for any conditions that could impact your baby postnatally. This is also the scan where you can find out the sex of your baby if you want to. If you don’t want to know your baby’s sex be sure to mention it to your sonographer at the beginning of your appointment so they can tell you look away at the appropriate time and not share any unwanted information.
